Start with a sketch.
Find the words next.

A blank page can be hard to start. Pick one thing you noticed, draw it in the box, then use the lines to tell its story. Try one real page from Where Ideas Grow before choosing the paperback.

One observation is enough

From a picture to a few words

  1. Choose something small.

A leaf on the path, a snack you made, or a moment from the day. Add the date and weather.

  2. Sketch the part you remember.

Use a few shapes or a quick diagram. The drawing only needs to help you remember.

  3. Tell what happened.

Try “I noticed…”, “It reminded me of…”, or “I wonder…”. These are optional starting phrases for this activity.

  4. Name your mood.

Draw a face and choose your own word. Leave the page as it is, or return later with another thought.

An invented example to try

A bent leaf can become a tiny story.

Sketch a leaf with one folded edge. Then write: “I found this leaf beside the gate. The folded edge looks like a little boat. I wonder where it would float after the rain.”

A younger writer can start with a label or one sentence. The paperback uses regular ruled lines, so check the sample if you need wide handwriting lines. A parent can ask what happened next and let the writer choose the words.

Printing the sample

Choose US Letter and 100% / Actual Size to keep the journal page at 6 × 9 inches. On A4, choose Fit if your printer clips the sheet; that may slightly change the size. The PDF is a free personal-use sample, not the full book.
